“All it takes is for one employee to click on a malicious link or attachment and the entire company could be brought to a halt from ransomware,” says David Greenham, vice-president at accounting and consulting firm Richter. “Depending on how good or bad the organization’s data backups are, this could result in lost revenue, lost productivity, loss of customers and damaged reputation. In some extreme cases, the company could actually go out of business if they can’t recover their vital data.”
