While it may be stressful to receive notice of an audit, “you need to establish a plan and a timeline, and keep a record of communications, i.e. requests made, answers given, and documents provided,” Martin says. Keeping a detailed plan and record can help simplify the process, ensuring nothing is forgotten.

Martin also recommends starting to compile all pertinent documentation needed in a file to facilitate the audit. If the audit is for a business, he suggests picking one representative to handle all the communications with the tax agencies: “this person can be from the business or an external representative,” says Martin.
